WordPress Developer Educator

Hi, my name is Brad Touesnard. I’m the founder of Delicious Brains Inc. We make high quality products for WordPress.

The “we” is currently a small team of eight developers, one designer, one marketer, and myself. I’m very proud to say that our little crew has been managing to delight thousands of customers for years.

Despite the crazy times we’re living in, we have big plans for 2020 and this is a great opportunity to join a small team of talented folks building awesome products before we get bigger.

The Job

First, this is not a Technical Writer position. While we can appreciate talented writers who can understand technical concepts and explain them to a non-technical audience, this job is not that.

Our audience is developers, so we need a great writer with lots of experience in advanced web development. Or an advanced web developer who is a great writer and wants to explore development through writing full-time.

When meeting people at events, they often compliment our products, but at least as often they swoon over the articles we put out every week. Developers love our content. We put a lot of time and energy into producing high quality content specifically for them. It’s almost like another product to us.

Our team of developers currently write almost all of our posts in addition to writing code and documentation for our products and supporting our customers. I joke that we’re a blogging company that sells some software products on the side. 🙃

As the dedicated writer on our team, you’ll write tutorials, documentation, and marketing copy and help our team with their writing. You’ll also do a little customer support and might even help out with the development of our products and sites from time to time.

  • Writer – Write new content, update old content, and generally curate our content across all five of our product sites.
  • Editor – Coach our team of developers in writing engaging tutorials and other content.
  • Documentation – Work with developers to keep our documentation up-to-date with every release of our products.
  • Copywriter – Collaborate with the marketing team and our developers to draft copy for our sites and emails to our customers. You will make sure that copy drafted by the marketing team sounds right to developers.
  • Customer Support – Help our team support customers of our products.

  • Outstanding English communication skills. You will have a keen eye for grammar, spelling, and clear, concise writing. You must be in the 99th percentile in spoken and written English. I can’t emphasize this enough. Anything less will not do.
  • Ability to work in or around EST/EDT (Toronto) and the BST/GMT (London) time zones. Given the distribution of our team members, scheduling meetings can prove to be a challenge, having you in a timezone within or close to that range would be helpful.
  • Expert PHP & JavaScript development skills
  • 5,000+ hours (3+ years working full-time) of advanced PHP development
  • 5,000+ hours (3+ years working full-time) of HTML & CSS development
  • 5,000+ hours (3+ years working full-time) of advanced WordPress plugin development
  • 3,000+ hours (2+ years working full-time) of advanced JavaScript development
  • At least 3 pieces of writing that demonstrates your ability to teach developers
  • Self-motivated and works well independently
  • Comfortable working remotely (we don’t have an office)
  • Attend company retreats (see details below)

  • Experience developing in React
  • Experience writing automated tests
  • Experience writing marketing copy
  • Open source contributions
  • System administration skills
  • Experience working in a remote team
  • Computer Science degree or equivalent

About You

You enjoy writing. The writing process enables you to do your best thinking. You have extensive experience publishing technical content and have received praise for it from developers.

Writing clearly and concisely is always the top goal for you, but you balance this with an informal, conversational tone that makes for pleasant, easy reading. You go over your own drafts many times to iron it out before presenting it to anyone for review. In a pinch, you’re capable of publishing a piece with no major issues without help from a reviewer.

You have many years of experience as a backend web developer and have a firm understanding of advanced web development concepts, build systems, deployment, and hosting. Ideally you also have experience with PHP, WordPress, and system administration.

You’re curious and love to learn. You look forward to meetings with fellow developers and are energized by technical conversations.

Although you often need people to help you generate ideas and formulate a plan of attack on a project, you do your best work in isolation without interruption. You’re proactive in tackling things that need to be done without direction.

You embrace the opportunity to level up, learn something new and really dig into it. You’re a disciplined worker and have no trouble getting work done at home on any given day.

You’re exceptional at communicating in writing via instant message, email, etc. You’re ok on the phone and video chat too. You understand that excellent communication is part of what makes a team work better together and clear, concise written communication is how remote teams thrive. Putting a pull request up for review without explaining its context or what you need from the team is unheard of in your world.

You own both your successes and your failures. You practice Extreme Ownership. When a project you’re leading turns into a disaster, you own it and you learn from it. You never point the finger at others under your leadership.

You invite criticism and genuinely want to grow as a professional. We’re big on pushing each other to be better. That’s how we grow as individuals and a team. It’s one thing to accept criticism and another to ask for it and use it to level up.

  • Location Independent. Work from wherever you’re happiest, as long as you can make scheduled meetings.
  • Choose Your Schedule. Most companies claim to have flexible hours, but the reality is often very different. We flex our hours for real. 💪As long you’re hitting 30-37.5 hours per week on average and you do what you say you’ll do, we’re good.
  • Company Retreats. As a remote company, it’s super important to get some face time. Last year we met up in Berlin and we’re headed to Portugal in June. Will you be joining us?
  • Personal Development. If there’s a conference or event that will help you level up, the company will cover your expenses. You’re also allotted 3 hours per month to learn something new, participate in community discussions, and/or contribute to an open source project.
  • Profit Sharing. I present a Profit & Loss report to the team quarterly so everyone knows how the company is doing. And when the company does well, the team does well.
  • Company Holidays. Things get pretty quiet in late December / early January, so we always treat ourselves to a couple of weeks off to reboot during this time.
  • Paid Leave. For the birth or adoption of a child, the company offers 8 weeks of 100% paid leave for primary caregivers and 3 weeks for secondary caregivers. We also offer 5 paid sick days and 3 days of paid bereavement leave.
  • Competitive Salaries. The company pays salaries that are competitive with the market in which you reside. We don’t use the benefits of remote as leverage to negotiate lower salaries.

How To Apply

We are an equal opportunity employer. Application information that is prone to unconscious biases is hidden during the review process whenever possible. We judge the content of the applications on their own without knowledge of the applicant’s race, color, gender, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, physical or mental disability, or age.
