Coming in WP Migrate DB Pro 1.4: Pause/Resume and Cancel Controls

The migration progress interface in WP Migrate DB Pro has always felt very similar to the file transfer interface you’d typically see in an operating system or FTP program. With one notable difference, the inability to interact with the migration in any meaningful way.

Once you started a migration, you had to wait until it completed. There was no official way to stop it. Some of you may have discovered that you could safely stop a migration by reloading the browser window. But this was a bit of a hack as it left temporary database tables behind.

WP Migrate DB Pro 1.4 is set to improve this by introducing Pause/Resume and Cancel buttons allowing you to have more control over your migrations.

Let’s say you have a meeting at a cafe and need to bring your laptop. You need to fold it up and go now. But your migration is still running. Not a problem in 1.4. Simply click the Pause button to freeze the migration. When you get back from your meeting, click the Resume button and the migration will pick up right where it was.

When you click the Cancel button, the migration stops and all temporary files and temporary database tables are cleaned up (removed), ensuring no junk is left behind polluting your database.

As always, we love hearing your feedback and suggestions. Please feel free to leave your thoughts in the comment section below.

    Very cool!

I always wanted a cancel button but the pause/resume is another bonus. Great work.

  • Always nice to see new features. =)

  • Jonathan Perlman

Personally, I wouldn’t want to pause the migration. I’d want to be able to cancel and revert changes.

  • Great new feature, Chris and Brad, thanks! Y’all read my mind.

    awesome

Awesome!! What would happen if I walk away from my computer and it decides to fall asleep?
This happened to me once while testing the Media Add-on – the migration took quite a bit longer than usual due to the 900 files. When I got back, i saw that there was an error with the migration and some temporary tables were left in the db. This is a fringe case, though.

    • I’m not entirely sure what would happen to the migration if your computer were to go into sleep mode. Have you had any problems with your migrations while your computer was not in sleep mode?

      • Tamara

        Nope, absolutely loving the plugin!
That was the only time I had an “issue” but I really should have guessed what would happen if I lost network access 🙂
I just thought maybe the new pause feature somehow, magically addressed this.

        • Sleep mode seems like it would kill a migration.

If you know you’re going to be stepping away from the computer for an extended period of time you might want to consider using the pause/resume feature.

  • Hi Chris, thanks for the update and just to let you know: This feature has no relevance for me. I never had problems canceling or re-starting the process via reload.

As usual, another great feature for an already invaluable plugin. Please keep improving this plugin. Don’t think I could work without it anymore.
